Overwhelmed

I feel lost.

There it is.

Maybe it is coming from all the emotions from taking the test today that will tell me if or Not that this baby is okay and does not have a neural tube defect like our sweet angel baby Jonathan. I hate that test and I love that test. It is the test I took that initially told us that Jonathan would not live, that the sweet baby I felt kicking inside me would die with in minutes of birth. I was his only source of life. I love that test and it's ability to tell me in advance, sparing me such anguish when I don't bring home a healthy child as I would have expected otherwise. I loath it because it tells me such horrible things.

That day will never leave my mind. I think a part of me was naive until that day. I took that test without a care for the results. It never even crossed my mind that it could come back as something other than fine. That doesn't happen to people like you and me.

I hope in the next few days to know again, as I did with Jaxon that all is well and baby is fine.
I will report back and maybe feel a little less lost.

This too shall pass right?

Laws of Motion

What is Newton's 3rd law of motion? For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. So basically when I made the appointment for a family photo session with Elle for last Sunday I should have seen it coming. I mean who hasn't seen the kid with the black eye or the cut on the face only to have their mother turn and say "yup, school pictures this week. Figures!"

I should have seen to coming!

Saturday when we were hanging out at home after I had slept in a bit (yum) and Jax was playing on my lap in the recliner. He would hang over the left arm and pull himself back up. Over and over. The last time he did it he pushed with his feet with all his might. I had an arm over his back for support but it wasn't enough. I tried to catch him with my right hand but his little foot slipped through.

My baby fell on his head. :( Worst. Mommy. Ever.

I scooped him up. He was crying pretty hard. I tried to access this situation, looking for blood and bumps. Nothing. He had no raising lumpies to speak of.

After a few more minutes of comforts and love he was done with me. I set him down on the floor by the slide (yes we have one in the family room) and tried to get him to crawl up. He cried. So I helped him do down. He laughed and had fun doing that a few times. Then I offered for him to try again. He tried to crawl and he just fell over and cried.

I thought maybe his equilibrium was off, being that he just smacked his head on the floor. More snuggles. A bit later he tried to crawl again with the same result. At this point it was about 5 minutes from the fall and I looked at Zack.

"I think it's broken. His arm. I think we need to take him in now"

He wanted to wait a bit and see if he felt better in a few minutes, but I knew. Something was wrong. I gathered us all together and headed for Urgent Care. $40, 2 Xrays and 1 screaming-held-down-looking-at-me-like-HOW-COULD-YOU-MAMA baby later and it was confirmed.
Broken Wrist. Both bones. Our best guess is he had his hands down when he fell and "caught" himself with his hand. It was tiny and hard to see on the Xray and our photo is even worse so I will spare you. He is in a temporary cast for at least a week (though our apt for a real cast is the 11th- does that seem too FAR to anyone else? They said they would see us again this week but then the apt person called she said they wanted to see me NEXT week. Almost 2 weeks after the break...)
I feel horrible. Poor little guy!

He can't crawl, though he tries to arm crawl sometimes. Mostly he just gets annoyed because he loses his balance and falls over and can't get up on his own. Luckily, he doesn't seem to be in any pain. He has been quite the trooper through it all. Now to get a cast to look 'cool' for those family photos I have to reschedule.

I shoulda seen it comin'

PILA Month day 18

Day 18 - my wedding/future wedding/past wedding.
When I got married 9 years and 2 months ago (today) it was the happiest day of my life. (I have since had children, love you honey but they win. ) I digress. I had dreamed of my wedding, like most little girls, my whole life. I knew I wanted a bit white dress and in the dream wedding I wanted to be barefoot on the beach. We almost had that dream wedding but we traded it for the wedding of OUR dreams but having the person marry us the Zack wanted. He would only do it indoors so as not to lose the meaning and words in the wind. It was a lesson in compromise that has served me well. Marriage is just that. A compromise. It is never about just one of you again. It is about 2 of you, then 3 then 4 and so on... I am happy that I married the man I did. Marriage isn't perfect, but it's not supposed to be. It is forever a lesson in compromise.

PILA Month day 13

Day 13 - a fictional book that is meaningful to you since your loss.

I picked up Jodi Picoult novels not long after we lost Jonathan. Some were harder to read than others. All of her stories are about "real" people and the choices they make in their lives. They have to choose between the best friend that accidentally killed their child or honoring the child that is gone. Or having another child to create a ready-made donor for your existing sick and dying child. Never easy choices. Never cut and dry.

I identified with them, though the stories were not the same because with Jonathan we had to choose. When we found out at 17 weeks that something was wrong with Jonathan and the next day what was wrong, we had to decide. To terminate or to carry. Everyone faced with choices of this nature think they have all the answers before the question is asked and then you get there and the answer is just not as clear cut as you once though it to be.

PILA Month day 12

Day 12 - something you are OCD about.

Carseats. Consumer Reports sights that 4 out of 5 children's car seats are installed incorrectly. I remember the moment I became a self appointed "car seat Nazi". I was a nanny for a family with one little girl. She was 2 and one day dad asked for my car seat so he could run some errands. Mom had the other one in her car so I took the seat out of my car and put it in his. I didn't install it. I just put it on the seat in his SUV. The next morning I went to get the car seat which was still in his car. It was not buckled in- AT ALL. I asked Dad if he had unbuckled it for me? He looked at me blankly. Turns out he had not even buckled it IN. He had assumed I did all that and just put her in her seat and took off.

Luckily, nothing happened. They got home safe and sound and no one was hurt. It could have been worse. Much worse. Every day you hear stories of children in car seats installed wrong and injured or killed because of it. After that day I demanded permanent car seats in my car at every nanny job I took. Not because it's too hard to take in and out but because it just leaves too much room for error. In hindsight I should have installed the car seat myself, since I knew what I was doing. I should not have assumed Dad did. I have never assumed that since. For anyone. I don't leave that in the hands of others. My charges seats in the past or my own children's seats in the present. So ya, I'm OCD about my car seats. And I am okay with it.

For the record I recently took my car to a professional car seat technician for inspection and am happy to report that I received a gold star and 100% approval for my installation. :)

What to do?

What to do?
With ALL THAT artwork my son makes?!

I recently set up an art center in our family room.
I found the cubes on the side of the road one day with a free sign. :) They spoke to me and so in the car they went! There is 3 more in my entry closet with shoes and such in them.

Grayson loves that he has access to "all" of his art supplies and can get them and put them away easily. Mommy loves that he doesn't have access to "all" of his art supplies just a few of all of the kinds I have hidden away in the locked cabinet in the playroom and that he can get them and put them away him self. I love that he is very independent.

Preschool has only helped to reaffirm how independent he is. He loves showing off his drawings and projects and using different mediums to create. I have a stack of lovely photos to prove it. I obviously can't keep everything. I try to take photos of all of my favorites so I can keep them forever, just digitally. And today I cut up some 12 x12 card stock from the long ago forgotten art of scrapbooking and then cut up his works of art and made cards. If you give a gift in the next year (or 5) you may be getting a Thank you card like these.

For those who want to know exactly how: I cut the card stock in 3 (folded in half they were 4 x 6) then cut the art work 3 3/4" x 5 3/4" used a glue stick and stick it on. I tried to cut out the best bits and saved any larger white bits for use later.

OH! And a nice little pat on my back... I was asked yesterday if I would be okay being on the substitute teach list for the "just in case" event that the teacher can't teach our class one day. They pick three. Usually it is people who have been in the school for a year or two. I almost peed a little with anxiety of leading 18 3-5 year old for 3 hours but I agreed, on the condition that I be called LAST until I settle in a bit better! Anyway, YAY me!

A stick in hand

My friend Heidi and her family used to split time between Portland and AZ but last summer they sold their house here and became mostly full-time AZ residents. (boo) They do visit for most of the summer though staying with family and not nearly as close as they were before.

We recently got a chance to meet up with her and her boys at Washington Park, where the old zoo used to be. (mentioned here) Her boys are just a bit older than G at 4 and 6. They were having a great time playing on the equipment and in the sandbox.

Heidi's youngest 'C' had a stick and was playing quite happily with it, not hurting anyone, when we notice a woman getting up and coming over to where we were watching the boys from. She walks over to us and asks in an accusing tone "Do you have rules for sticks or something because your son is jumping off the elephant with that stick and he's making us nervous... he's going to hurt himself of someone else". Heidi responded with something to the effect of "Thanks! He's ok." The woman apparently couldn't believe her ears because she just stared at us dumbfounded, shook her head and walked away.

Then she turns, looks at us and says quite exasperated "SEE!? He's pointing that STICK at that little boy!!" That little boy was G and he was being HANDED the stick by C. LOL Some people just can't let go. I said, "Thanks, that is my son and he doesn't look concerned so I am not either" They continued to play happily while she packed up her child, who was screaming at being dragged away for no reason.

We just shrugged.

Heidi asked if she should tell her "A stick in hand and all is grand!"

T is the one hiking up his shorts, C is in black track pants.

I figured it was best left alone. Though I really wanted to "poke the bear". I just love people like that. They make me laugh.

G after he face planted off the elephant.

Jaxon is 6 months!!

I just don't know where the time has gone?! How can my sweet tiny baby be 6 months old? I really don't know but he is. He is so sweet and just so much fun! He loves to play with his toys and his brother. He loves to laugh and it's truly one of the most amazing sounds I have ever heard. I just can't get enough of it.

Jaxon loves to snuggle and will spend hours curled up in my arms and currently no one else will do. He loves to eat both big people food and his "milkies" and has grown to a fabulous 20 lbs 4 oz. and 28.5" tall. His favorite foods are sweet potatoes and cereal but anything on our plates will do and he lets us know when we are not fast enough in our offerings.

He can sit up all by himself, has rolled over from both sides to the other but doesn't really do it very often now that he has mastered sitting since he is rarely laying.

uh oh

We are regular visitors of our library. We try to go to story time weekly and get new books. We won't be getting new books for a while.

I sent G to his room for a nap the other afternoon. I was on the phone so it was a while before I realized it was very quiet. So I crept up the stairs to see if he had fallen asleep. I peeked in his door and saw him crouched over one of his books on his floor.

A library book.

In itty, bitty, teeny, tiny pieces.

I was so angry and yet I was having a hard time not laughing.

Seriously? Tiny pieces?! Who does that to a book? We always talk about how we have to be gentle with books and we treat them nicely and respectfully or they have to go up high in the closet until he is older. Apparently it didn't sink in.

Better yet.

It was a 'NO DAVID' book. David books are about a boy named David who, you guessed it, is always getting told no.
I told G he was to take money out of his piggy and we were going to go to the library the next day and pay his money to the library for ruining their book.
Next day came and we marched ourselves down there, change in hand (my checkbook poised to pay the difference) and ziplock full of page bits. The librarian was very sweet, trying to act serious as I explained what had happened and as G said he was sorry and offered up his money to *pay* for the book.
She stiffled her giggle looked at him and the book very seriously, noted it was already missing a page and told us it was *okay* this time {I quickly interjected NOT okay} and that THIS time she would not take his money. But...
We had a long talk in the car about how the librarian didn't say it was okay to DO but because he promised not to do it again and he had said he was sorry the library would nicely not take his money THIS time. He is now not allowed books in bed. He is reminded of this lesson daily.
Honestly, I think this is one lesson he will learn.
(As we were about to leave the librarian looks at me and smiles. "I am going to show this to the girls in the back! It really is very cute and funny" she says under her breath. Oy. I am so glad she {mostly} played along. )

ps. blogger is being a booger and REFUSES to post this properly but since its been two weeks since I posted I figured I better get something out there before the natives get restless. So pretty it is not, but hopefully its mildly entertaining.

Guess what?!

I have been sitting on a secret. I guess after so much crap in the last year(s) we have finally started just waiting until we know things for sure before we announce. It's sad really. But thankfully I am able to announce that Zack got a job! And not just a call center to bring in a little dough while looking for something else, a real job. That he is excited about. He starts Monday!

I have begun the countdown of how long I have off before I have to go back to T. Though now it will probably be nights and weekends since I would be working solely to pay daycare otherwise. Literally. We are pretty sure the new job's hours are 6am-3pm which would be prefect for me to be able to work eves. And of coarse I will have my nanny job, at which I am supposed to start back in 3 weeks.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In other news, I am feeling better. Last I reported was our birth story when I mentioned I felt like I had been sawed in two and put back together backwards. I am feeling better. Definitely not 100% but better. I can move without holding my breath and crying out. I am trying not to overdo it. But as I am me and that is just not how I roll... I went to the grocery store yesterday.
By myself.
For a full-on-packed-cart trip.
Apparently forgetting that carts get heavy.
It was too much. I was very tired and about half way through the canned food isle I realized what an idiot I was. I felt faint.
Damn that missing blood!
I am pretty sure the bags of canned food are still sitting on the floor next to the pantry waiting for me to put them away.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Jaxon is doing great.
We went to the mother/baby nurse last Thursday to make sure all was well, as is standard Kaiser procedure. He had lost 7oz in the "hostible" (hospital) as Grayson calls it, and he was 8lbs 12 oz already!

Then this Tuesday we went to our breast feeding support group (*boob group from here on out) and I weighed him to see if my infant scale that I bought was close/the same. I plopped him on there not expecting much. Yeah! 8lbs 14 oz! Woohoo back to birth weight. Nursed him and weighed again. Another oz. But this time I did a double take... um not 8 lbs...9lbs 15 oz!!! Holy Crap fat baby Batman!

The pediatrician was very pleased today when he weighed him and got the same (Jaxon had a onsie and diaper on the other day when I weighed him- I knew it was a bit off) he commented that I grow them well or something... Mind you, our Ped is about as old as dirt and reminds me of a miniature British Herman Munster from the Munsters. He is amazing and warm and we love him. We have had him since G was 3 days old and boy am I glad I stumbled on him.

Off to go feed my baby some Mama-buttermilk! :)

Daddy's boy

Jaxon gets these very serious looks on his face. Could be gas.
Could be confusion at all the new things. Could be he can't see a damn thing beyond 12 inches.

We like to think its because he is a genious, pondering world peace and cures for cancer.

3 years as a Mommy

Three years ago today I became a mommy. In that time I have learned many things:

~ I have learned that while a nanny can love a child with all her heart, it takes being a mommy to know how deep that love can go. There is just no end.

~ I have learned that while children are expensive and need a lot, the only things they really require are unconditional love and cuddles. Oh and kisses on boo boos.

~ Children will ALWAYS make a liar out of you. (thanks Gretchen)

~ Everyday is an adventure, you just never know what it will bring.

~ I can handle more than I ever thought possible.

~ I have learned that sleep is a luxury after children.

~ Being selfish is just NOT optional.

~ I have learned that cleaning is futile when there is a toddler is your house. They just have different ideas about clean and organized.

~ I have learned that while I thought I was creative I never knew how it would affect my ability to get someone to eat their vegis!

~ You can lead a child to ( the potty/ food/ their bed) but you can NOT MAKE them (pee- poop/ eat/ sleep)

~ So many times a day I think to myself... My parents are SO laughing their asses off right about now.

I love being a mom. I have always known it was what I wanted to do with my life and there would be nothing greater that I would ever achieve. I hope that my children grow to be compassionate, loving, responsible, able, caring, healthy, productive members of society as adults. And from who G is today I think we might just get them there.

Dear Grayson~ You make me so proud to be your mommy. Every day you grow into a sweeter, my amazing boy who makes my heart flutter every time you giggle. I love that you are so friendly and helpful. I love that you love life and love to explore anything and everything you come across. I love that right now you ask WHY when you want to know something and when you have not been satisfied by our answers you follow that with a "What kind of___?" and continue until we are exhausted or your curiosity is.

Having you in my life makes me want to be better at being a mommy and wife and better in life. You have completed me in a way I never knew could be filled so full. I love you more and more everyday. Happy Birthday sweet, amazing boy! ~Mommy

Harvest Festival

At the Harvest Festival they had a little photo booth set up and were taking digital pics. They were also taking email addresses to send them to you at a later date. Honestly, I never figured I would see them (based on a recent photographer experience but that is another story) Today, I opened my email and imagine my surprise to see these!

(I feel-and look- like a hippo)

LOVE his smile in these!

Happy Halloween from the Buquets!

Today it was supposed to be horribly rainy and gross so this am after I finally got up (at 10- my hubby says now that I get to sleep in whenever I can on weekends since I am pregnant. Yay!) we went to Plumper Pumpkin Patch. It was dead quiet but we had a good time.

Grayson riding a tractor, not really a ride, the keys were still in it! oops!

Then we came home to have lunch and "attempt" a nap. Didn't happen. He came down after 45 minutes of needing drinks, pooping in his diaper, and fighting cause "its dark"- at noon. Sigh. He came down carrying his clothes from his closet that were to go under his costume.

We got him all dressed and headed to the mall for some trick or treating since it was supposed to rain at trick or treat time.

This is Joe (my friend Diana's brother) he is a very good sport! He was a dragon along with his little one John.

Grayson was very excited to do some trick or treating! Holding his loot bag that I had just made today. Just happened to have some orange Trick or Treat fabric laying around.
After about an hour of candy hunting and Grayson saying "Trick or Treat!" and "Happy Halloween" to all the candy distributors we decided to head home for dinner and to get ready for our next leg of the days adventures.

Grayson was apparently tired by this point. He was out, mid sentence while saying he was thirsty, before he ever took a drink.
REALLY out! I have never seen this child so tired!
He NEVER transfers to the couch, always wakes up immediately!
About 5:45 we were about to leave for a Harvest Festival at our friends church and G was still sleeping (he fell asleep about 5 or so). We tried to wake him, but he just kept falling back to sleep.

One might think a nice parent would allow their child to sleep... we aren't nice.
We put him in the car and went to the Harvest Festival.
He finally woke up about 6:20 and was ready to play. There was a ton of games to do and for each he got a piece of candy (or a handful depending on the person manning the booth!)

THEN when we left there we T or T'ed a few neighbors houses (since it hadn't rained in hours!) that we knew and then we were finally done!

This is the loot Grayson got. He was so stoked! I guess its ingrained to come home and lay it all out and count it because that was what he immediately suggested.

That is a very proud boy! Now to try and get him to bed...

Oh, and a funny bit, as we walked around the neighborhood there were some spooky costumes behind us. G kept turning around yelling "Go away MAN, Go away!" When I realized what the costumes were I had to stifle a giggle. It was a tiny kid, HIS size, in one of those masks that fill with blood when you pump the hand ball (like this) Who puts that on their 3 yr old?! The other kid was a very beefed up super hero of some sort I had never seen before. He calmed down when I told him it was just kiddos in costumes like him. But he did glance back a time or two more.

Monsters under the bed

Having been a nanny before Grayson, for mostly toddlers I knew this was coming. And somehow I thought we'd escape it.

Nope.

A few months ago he started saying there was a MAN in his room. We told him that there wasn't but he was sure there was. I figured it was just his tree behind his door. It does cast quite the shadow at night and I am sure if you are a toddler that could be quite scary. But it went on. He was adamant that there was a MAN in our house.

Now to get a little kooky for a second, I have always been a little "sensitive" to the paranormal. I was 6 when I saw my first "something," and another friend saw it too so it wasn't just me!
Then at 14 when a neighbor girl died in my mothers arms after a tragic car/bicycle accident, in a blanket that later ended up on my bed and weird things started happening in my house I was seemingly an old pro. It took me months to figure out the blanket was the connection, and it went in the garage. End of weird things... in the house. (Dad- THAT is why I hated the garage on Upas.) There have been many more over my life time.

The most recent of which was at my last house. It was a 1930.
It only had two previous owners before us. The last of which had it for 50something years and the wife died while in possession of the house (though not in it). It took him another 5 years to part with it, though not living in it most of that time. By the time we bought it it needed a good cleaning and much work. We made an agreement with the owner to do most of the work we wanted done ourselves to save him money but he had to pay for it- before we were done with the transaction. It got us keys for 2+ months before we owned it. Many nights we were there late; Zack working on miscellaneous things and me cleaning and ripping out 50 year old shelf paper etc.

One night, I was in the basement scrubbing as usual and "Zack" walked in. I "saw" him out of the corner of my eye. I began talking about what a pain in the ASS this job was and talked for a few minutes before I realized he was not answering me. I turned around to find no one, but still feeling like he was there behind me. I had many things "moved", rooms that felt "odd" to me, cold spots. And moving breezes in rooms with no windows open. You name it. I also had another friend tell me how creapy one particular room was, the same room I felt "odd" in. I had not told that friend anything about it yet.

So to hear my child say there is a MAN in his room, makes me a little weary. I can't say there ISN'T for sure. I don't see him or feel him, but that doesn't mean he doesn't exist. I felt very alone when I was a child and noone believed me. I didn't want to scare him, so we just told him we would protect him and keep him safe but that Mommy and Daddy don't see him.

Now we have moved onto Grayson being terrified of monsters under his bed. Bed time is usually a battle. He still says the man is there sometimes but mostly its just monsters. Poor thing. We leave on the ALL of the lights and still he screams a blood curtailing shrill as soon as you move away from him. :(

Last night I sat on the edge of his bed until he was in a light sleep then crept out. I found Zack and just shrugged. He won't go to college scared of the monsters being under his bed, I guess.

Unless they really are...

Happy Halloween!

(Dave- we will always miss you and I think about you often. Love and hugs.)
